The first childcare experience is a major milestone in every child's life, but it is often accompanied with a lot of fear and uncertainty. Based on our many years of childcare experience, we have come up with tips to help make the transition to a childcare setting smoother for your little one (and for you!)
- Get your child used to the daycare's schedule before they start (nap times, meals, etc.)
- Transition slowly into the program (1 hour the first day, 2 hours the second day, half day on the third day)
- Create a list of what you will need to bring after talking to teachers/administration
- Make sure your child has proper clothing for outdoor play in all types of weather
- Label everything!
- Talk to your child about going to daycare, let them know what you expect. Understand that if you are calm about it, they will be too.
- Feel free to tell your child's teachers about any special things your child likes or doesn't, how they fall asleep, what their favourite songs and books are. Any relevant information you can give to teachers will go a long way with making your child feel secure and happy.
- When you are dropping your child off, it is best to keep it short and sweet. (avoid the tears... we're talking about yours) Tell your child what's happening and that you wil be back. They will cry, but usually not for very long, and eventually they won't cry at all. If you linger or keep coming back, it is harder for you and your child. Create a goodbye routine and stick to it.
- Bring by family members that will be picking up or dropping off during transition week so they are familiar with the staff, childcare layout, etc. They should be aware of the pick up and dropoff procedures, and they should be prepared to show ID for the first little while until staff are familiar with them.
- Most importantly, this is probably harder on you than it is on them, know that they will be loved and well taken care of at Alphabet Treehouse Childcare! Please feel free to ask teachers anything and talk about how you're feeling. We understand how difficult it is to leave your child, after all, most of us are parents as well. In times of uncertainty, remember that daycare is super fun, educational and helps children socialize and become comfortable with other kids. We are here to make daycare a wonderful exprience for both you and your child!
